It's 1927 in Hollywood, and talking pictures are emerging. Some actors who can sing and dance will continue in their careers, but not everyone will survive.
Don Lockwood (Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Hagen) are the biggest stars in Hollywood during the silent film era.
With the release of "The Jazz Singer" many studios realize that not all of their stars will be able to transition to talking pictures, especially Lina Lamont.
At the same time, Don meets aspiring actress Kathy Seldon (Reynolds) and they fall in love, much to Lina's dismay.
At a Hollywood party, an incident sparks a rivalry between Lina and Kathy for Don's attention. Lina attempts to undermine Kathy's dreams of becoming a star.
Kathy is hired to dub Lina's voice in the latest Lockwood and Lamont movie.
Jean Hagen is hilarious as Lina whose voice and diction are beyond unsuitable for talking pictures.
Donald O'Connor is Cosmo, Don's longtime best friend and musical director. He displays such athleticism in his musical numbers, he is a delight.
It's fun to watch a young Debbie Reynolds as Kathy Seldon. She does an amazing job in keeping up with Kelly and O'Connor in some very complex and entertaining dance sequences.
Gene Kelly delivers a flawless performance, with his athletic dance skills appearing nearly superhuman.
This film features numerous unforgettable classic numbers: Kelly and O'Donnell in "Fit as a Fiddle," O'Donnell's "Make 'Em Laugh," and Kelly's incredible "Singing in the Rain."
Gene Kelly's choreography is as captivating as any Busby Berkeley film.
I am so, so happy when I watch this movie. This is probably the best classic Hollywood musical ever made. Nothing else comes close. You need to see it.
